Little Easton Church

Little Easton Church and The Gardens of Easton Lodge

Little Easton Church
This Norman, 12TH century church is located at the top of Little Easton Manor’s gated main entrance. Visit the American Memorial chapel with its modern stained-glass “Crusader” windows in memory of the 386th Bomb Group USAAF based at Easton Lodge or enjoy the wall paintings and brasses together with monuments to the distinguished ancestors of the famous Countess of Warwick (King Edward VII's 'Darling Daisy') and the memorial to the actress Dame Ellen Terry.

Gardens of Easton Lodge
The 23-acre Gardens of Easton Lodge were designed for their owner the Countess of Warwick (Daisy) in 1902 by leading Edwardian architect and landscape designer Harold Peto. Daisy had inherited Easton Lodge back in 1865 when she was just three years old. The estate dates to 1590 when it was granted to the Maynard family by Elizabeth I. Daisy felt that the grounds should reflect the wealth and splendour of her Victorian mansion.

Peto designed many features including a cobbled courtyard with fountain, Japanese Garden with teahouse overlooking the lake, terraces, formal lawns, a treehouse which could seat up to 10 adults and a stunning Italian Garden complete with 100ft balustraded pool. Inspired by the gardens of Italy, Peto designed very romantic flower schemes with features such as balustrading. Daisy died in 1938 and her son did not appreciate her formal gardens and started to plant an arboretum over them. His death in 1960 led to the gardens becoming overgrown with saplings, weeds and brambles.

The Creasey family moved in to the house in 1972 and since then they have been slowly restoring the Japanese Garden, Terrace beds and Formal Lawns. The Gardens of Easton Lodge are an idyllic haven (Historic England, Grade II listed). They have been partially restored to their former glory by a team of dedicated volunteers and the owners of Warwick House.

Other Local Churches

BROXTED: The hostage windows in Broxted are modern. When John McCarthy was taken hostage in Beirut, his parents lived next door to the church.

TILTY: Boasts a remarkable east window, and was originally the gate house to a Cistercian Abbey, but after the dissolution of the monasteries was left as a chapel for local people.

GREAT EASTON: “home” of the Five Parishes bell ringers, it features a magnificent reredos (altar screen).

CHICKNEY: The fifth church making up the Five Parishes is at Chickney, a little gem amongst the trees! This is now a redundant church, cared for by the Churches Conservation Trust.

The manor’s four ancient three -and-a-quarter acre carp lakes and Grand Pond are now a popular haunt for mirror carp and tench, creating a popular coarse fishing venue for local anglers.

Part of the extensive 66-acre estate may be hired for caravanning and an extensive lakeside field has been utilised as a caravan rally site having been established by Neville Pedley, one of the founder members of the Caravan Club.

Perfectly in keeping with the fun-loving history of Little Easton Manor, caravan rallies are a gathering of Club members meeting in a friendly and social atmosphere, held over a weekend, or longer, when you can do as little or as much as you like. Enjoy the local countryside, visit a stately home or local attraction or just sit comfortably and relax – the choice is yours. Please contact us for further information on 01371 872857

Thousands of visitors attend the Countess of Warwick’s Country Show held annually in the grounds of Little Easton Manor raising huge sums for The Five Parishes charity which supports the local churches in the immediate area and the Little Easton Manor’s chosen charity, the Centre Algarve project.

Named after the Countess of Warwick who was born at Easton Lodge into the Maynard family, the last Viscountess Maynard, who died in 1857, started the tradition of an annual flower show. This was revived by the Countess as part of a cottage garden show, with gardens judged prior to the show. Today, the show in Little Easton, (part of what is known as the Five Parishes), is set in beautiful countryside and in the summer months the lanes and hedgerows look at their best. The grounds of Little Easton Manor, so kindly opened for us by Andy and Mel, have been described as ‘A jewel of England perfectly set’. The Barn Theatre is one of the finest and oldest Tithe barns in the country with magnificent oak timbers and an ancient tile roof. The remains of a mediaeval moat can still be seen bordering its car park.
The aim of the Show is to celebrate life in the countryside, both past and present and secondly, to raise money to support these churches and help with their upkeep and restoration. Recently the stained-glass windows in the Bourchier (Maynard) chapel of Little Easton church have been restored by Cathedral Studios in Canterbury, costing about £30,000 with both Broxted and Tilty undertaking work on their belfries which have to be scheduled not to clash with the hibernation and breeding timetables of the resident bats!

Breathe Easy

They’re a breath of fresh air…

24×7 Stansted support eforests as their carbon offset partner, planting trees to help reduce the carbon cost of your taxi journey by contributing just 10p every time you use their taxis! Every 10p donation paid will be matched by 24×7 Stansted or for just a £5 donation (and theirs) you can have 2 trees planted. It’s amazing to think that the annual carbon consumed by these trees at maturity is 2 tons! We can all “pay it forward” to Mother Nature and effectively offset enough carbon to neutralise most individuals’ average taxi and private car use for a whole year.
Donations may be made at the booking desk within the International Arrivals hall at Stansted Airport or by credit card by phoning 01279 661 661 Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm
